Artist Profile

As an Indian contemporary artist living in diaspora, memory and cultural identity inform my work. There is a stronger need to rewind to the past and reconnect with roots. Similarities and contrasts, old and new, spiritualism and pragmatism – all intersect and connect in the absence of boundaries to create a contemporary outlook. Human psyche intrigues me. My art explores nuances of the psychological and social landscape around me through a process of reflection and meditation.

Eyes wide open…a heightened understanding of the universe through increased visual, peripheral and metaphysical perception. When ignorance gives way to a new consciousness, the mind calms down, yet at the same instant it experiences a dramatic transformation. This consciousness of self and its inner potential, in relation to surroundings, becomes the context of my work. Forms appear symbolically, awaiting answers to unspoken questions, in layers, almost dreamlike. Water, as an allegorical reference to the formless, all-encompassing and cyclical nature of the soul, features strongly in my recent work.

Many years of working as a formally trained designer, I am tuned to the exploration of media and materials and enjoy working on techniques to manipulate them. The need to innovate drives me to create art that is at once singular and non-conforming to familiar genres. I work primarily with acrylics on canvas, and enjoy experimenting with additive mediums and techniques to create dimensional effects. Currently I am also practicing encaustic art and printmaking.
